چکیده

Transient heat transfer models of the single-wheel meltspinning process are developed and applied to quantify the effect of process variables including interface depressions on solidification, temperature evolution, thickness variations, and surface depressions in the cast product. Firstly, a transient one-dimensional heat-transfer model of the melt-spinning process called STRIP1D was developed for Al -7% Si strips on a Cu-Be substrate and validated. Next, transient twoand three-dimensional heat-transfer solidification models of the process were developed and validated using the STRIP1D model. The models have then been used to understand the effect of process conditions including casting speed, puddle length (length of contact zone), gap height, superheat and interfacial depressions (gaps) on heat transfer in the strip, with the help of experimental measurements from a pilot caster in Cornell. The effects of interfacial boron nitride deposits and air gaps were quantified by measuring and modeling longitudinal and transverse surface depressions observed on the wheel-side surface of the strip. Interfacial depressions decrease heat conduction to the wheel and thereby cause surface depressions on the opposite side of the strip. The predicted depression shapes match well with experimental measurements. The control of surface depressions in the melt-spinning process could enable strip casting with imprinted textured surfaces.

Effects of Various Ageing Heat Treatments on Microstructural Features and Hardness of Piston Aluminum Alloy

Piston aluminum alloys have different intermetallic phases, such as Cu3Al, Mg2Si ,and AlNi phases. The morphology and the distribution of such phases have important roles on mechanical properties of the piston material. Therefore, in this research, various ageing heat treatments on the mentioned material were done and the microstructural feature and the hardness were studi...

A TRANSIENT TWO-DIMENTIONAL INVERSE ESTIMATION OF THE METAL-MOLD HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT DURING SQUEEZE CASTING of AL-4.5WT%CU

In this paper, a transient, two-dimensional and nonlinear inverse heat conduction problem in solidification process is considered. Genetic algorithm is applied for the identification of the interfacial heat transfer coefficients during squeeze casting of commercial aluminum alloy (Al-4.5wt%Cu) by assuming a priori information regarding the functional form of the unknown heat transfer coefficien...

DENDRITE FRAGMENTATION IN THE SHEARED MELT BY FATIGUE EROSION MECHANISM OF SEMISOLID Al-Si ALLOY (A.356.0

Over the last few decades, there have been many mechanisms proposed to describe the formation of the non-dendritic microstructures during Semisolid Metal (SSM) processing; including dendrite fragmentation, spherical growth, cellular growth and recalescence. Dendrite fragmentation is the most popular mechanism of all these hypotheses. It is the purpose of the present article to examine the morph...

TEM INVESTIGATION OF RAPIDLY SOLIDIFIED NDFEB HARD MAGNETIC MATERIAL

The surface condition and microstructure of near stoichiometric (Fe823Ndll.8B5.9) Nd-Fe-B alloy ribbons and the effect of melt spinning parameters were investigated using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM, TEM). The formation of gas pockets on the roll surface of the ribbons during melt spinning can prevent heat transform and result in local coarse grains. The local t...

EVALUATION OF PRESSURE EFFECT ON HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT AT THE METAL- MOLD INTERFACE FOR CASTING OF A356 AL ALLOY

Abstract: During solidification and casting in metallic molds, the heat flow is controlled by the thermal resistance at the casting-mold interface. Thus heat transfer coefficient at the metal- mold interface has a predominant effect on the rate of heat transfer. In some processes such as low pressure and die-casting, the effect of pressure on molten metal will affect the rate of heat transfer a...
